February 2023

  Note from the Principal...

Please continue to support our Schoolwide Expectations on being Peaceful, Productive, Healthy and Happy.  Talking to your child about school expectations is a great way to reinforce appropriate school behaviors.

We would love you to stay connected with us at Meachem.  We have a Meachem Facebook  page and a SCSD Meachem page.  Also, we send home information through School Messenger (emails, texts, and robo calls) and Talking Points.  Don't forget to contact the school if you have not been receiving messages, 315-435-4610.

Spirit Week

Our student council members created this month's spirit week.  It will take place the week of February 13th.

February's Life Skill: KINDNESS

Each month Meachem has a different life skill to support character education.  Each Monday, the students watch a video on the life skill and have discussions around it at Morning Meeting each day.

This month's life skill is 'KINDNESS.'  Kindness is a type of behavior marked by acts of generosity, consideration, or concern for others, without expecting a reward.  Kindness makes children happier, can reduce stress levels, and helps improve their self-esteem.  Kind actions also activate the joyful area in the brain and boosts well-being.

Each day at Meachem we celebrate kindness on the morning announcements.  The teachers recognize students that are 'caught' doing random acts of kindness with a 'Caught Being Kind' card.  Please ask your child if they have been recognized yet!

Cold Weather Outerwear

If you have any outerwear that your child has outgrown, please consider donating items to Meachem. We are always in need- especially snow pants!

The cooler weather is upon us! Please keep in mind that our students will continue to go outside for recess. If the temperature is 20 degrees Fahrenheit or above, recess can take place outside. If the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit (this includes factoring in the WINDCHILL), recess will be indoors. Students should always have appropriate clothing for the weather: Coat, boots, snow pants, hat, and gloves.

Also, please remember to label your child's cold weather clothing.

Meachem Spirit Wear

Don't forget every Friday is Meachem Spirit Wear Day to communicate how much we care about our Meachem Community.

Communication: Talking Points

We are thrilled to see so many of our families using the TALKING POINTS all to communicate with teachers at Meachem.  If you have not done so yet, please download the app; it allows you to:

  • Communicate directly and efficiently with classroom teachers
  • Communicate with school personal
  • Read notices that get sent home from the classroom and the school
  • Receive updated information from school quickly

Attendance Reminder

In order for your child to get everything they need at school they need to be here everyday, all day (unless they are sick).  Our school day is from 9:20- 3:35, our doors open at 9:05.  Please make sure you are doing your best to get your child here everyday.

Every student, every day, never late it's the Meachem way!

January 2023

 A Note from the Principal...

Happy New Year to you all!  We were all so happy on Tuesday to see our students return from the winter break.  Our Meachem students came in with big smiles on their faces and were ready to learn- thank you to all the families that sent their child/ren to school.

Please stay connected with us at Meachem.  We have a Meachem Facebook page and a SCSD Meachem page.  Also, we send home information through School Messenger (emails, texts, and robo calls) and Talking Points.  Please contact the school if you have not been receiving messages, 315-435-4610.

January's Life Skill: SELF-AWARENESS

Each month Meachem has a different life skill to support character education.  Each Monday, the students watch a video on the life skill and have discussions around it at Morning Meeting each day.

This month's life skill is 'SELF-AWARENESS.'  Self-awareness is when you understand your strengths and challenges and know what helps you thrive.  Self-awareness is also when you can understand how others feel about yourself.  When children understand themselves better it is easier for them to build positive self-esteem and relationships with others.

If you would like to read more on self-awareness or would like tips on how to support your child's development with self-awareness, please click on the links below.

December 2022

  Note from the Principal...

So many great things happened at Meachem in the month of November. Our students raised monies for cancer research, donated non-perishable goods for Thanksgiving, and our students received a free pair of gloves and a hat.

Thank you to all the parents that are abiding by our visiting policy and signing in when entering the building.  Keeping your children safe at school is our number one priority.

Raising Money for Cancer Research

The 4th grade students were challenged in the month of November to raise money for cancer research.  Mr. Lamon challenged them to raise $100; if they reached their goal he promised to dye his beard any color that they wanted.  At the end of November not only did he dye his beard, they surpassed their goal and raised $403, but they also had a representative from the Upstate Medical Foundation come to speak with them all on where their money is going.

Annual Wladis Hat and Glove Giveaway

Each year students receive a hat and a pair of gloves at our Annual Wladis Hat and Gloves Giveaway Event.  This year Meachem had 2 representatives from Berkshire come to support handing out the items to our students.  If you are in need of any winter clothes items, please contact the main office and let us know.

Spirit Week

Our student council members created this month's spirit week.  It will take place the week of December 19th.

November Food Drive

During the month of November we accepted donations of food to help provide Thanksgiving dinner to 10 local families.  All of the food was donated to Meachem families, as well as a turkey.  Thank you to everyone who contributed.

December's Life Skill: Empathy

Each month Meachem has a different life skill to support character education.  On Monday, the students watch a video about the life skill and have discussions around it at Morning Meeting each day.

This month's life skill is 'Empathy.'  Empathy means feeling or understanding how someone else feels.   When a student is empathic it helps them get along with others, which allows for strong relationships and more focus on learning.

November 2022

  A Note from the Principal...

October was another great month for Meachem Elementary students. The 26th marked the end of the first marking period; it seems like it went by so fast this year. On Tuesday, November 8th we welcome families in for Parent Teacher Conferences. If you can not make your scheduled appointment, please contact your child's teacher to reschedule. Teachers are prepared to discuss your child's report card and how your child is doing at school.

On October 31st, students enjoyed a parade around the neighborhood. It was so nice to see how many families came to watch the parade and join in on the classroom parties that followed.

Thank you to all the parents that are abiding by our visiting policy and signing in when entering the building.  Keeping your children safe at school is our number one priority.

Please continue to support our Schoolwide Expectations on being Peaceful, Productive, Healthy and Happy.  Talking to your child about school expectations is a great way to reinforce appropriate school behaviors.

One School, One Book: Wish Tree

We are so excited to let you all know that students are loving our schoolwide book- Wishtree.  The One School, One Book grant, allows schools to select a book to read together.  Each Meachem student received a copy to read at home with their family last month.  At school, our students have been celebrating and exploring the novel with their classmates. This essential strategy reinforces reading instruction, increases parental involvement, bridges the home-school connection, and builds a true community of readers.  We will finish the book this month and have a 'wish tree' of our own.
