May 2023

A Note from the Principal...

It's May!  I can't believe the school year has gone by so quickly.  This month's newsletter is full of information about events that will take place in May.  Please make sure you read through carefully and if you have any questions, give us a call.

I also want to take the time to remind you that we have 7 weeks left of the school year, and it is very important that your student is here every single day from now until June 22nd.

Please stay connected with us at Meachem.  We have a Meachem Facebook page and a SCSD Meachem page.  Also, we send home information through School Messenger (emails, texts, and robo calls) and Talking Points.  Please contact the school if you have not been receiving messages, 315-435-4610.

Muffins for Moms
On Friday, May 12th, Meachem invites all 'moms' in for a muffin and some juice to celebrate the special woman in our students' lives; please join us from 9:05 to 9:30 in the cafeteria.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week
Monday, May 8th - Friday, May 12th is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week.  Our wonderful teachers work so hard throughout the year, please support us in thanking our teachers.  Below you will find some ways your child could show they appreciate their teacher.

May's Life Skill: Friendship
Each month Meachem has a different life skill to support character education.  Each Monday, the students watch a video on the life skill and then discuss it at Morning Meeting each day in the classroom.

This month's life skill is 'FRIENDSHIP.'  Learning about how to be a good friend will help students be more successful at school, at home, and later in life.

PAX Leaders of the Week
Each week classroom teachers choose one student per grade level that exhibit PAX characteristics of being 'Peaceful, Productive, Healthy and Happy' while they are here at Meachem.  This award is given to students that consistently follow the Meachem expectations and to students that have significant improvements in following expectations.  The PAX leader is recognized each Monday at our assembly and is celebrated throughout the week.

Congratulations to our April PAX Leaders:

10,000 Book Challenge

Superintendent Anthony Q. Davis knows that students who read widely and read for pleasure have more academic success in schools. Reading can also have mental health benefits for children and adults alike. Research has associated reading with lower stress levels and even with living longer!  With those things in mind, Superintendent Davis is challenging the Syracuse City School District community to read 10,000 books throughout the months of May and June. It’s an ambitious goal but, if everyone participates, we can easily achieve it!

The10,000 Book Challenge builds on the current 20 Book Challenge that is already happening in SCSD Schools in which staff and students are tracking the books they read via printed materials provided by their library media specialist. All SCSD Schools’ staff and students as well as Syracuse residents living in the Syracuse City School District are encouraged to participate in this 10,000 Book Challenge which will simply require submitting a simple online form to track books that were read! Students and staff will be receiving bookmarks with the QR code, and each building will have posters with the information, to encourage participation. Bookmarks and flyers will also be located in the Syracuse City branches of Onondaga County Public Libraries.
